If you are, for example, bored of using PHP, then it might help to do a project in a new programming language, or as you said in the article, "seek variety at work". However, if the cause of boredom goes deeper, say you are bored of what "your" company does, then it becomes more difficult (but not impossible) to find another solution than switching the company.
